"It means nothing..."
A Psycho le Cemu Story
If you were to ask Psycho le Cemu what their name meant that would be your answer. Combining the names of their former bands (SCULP, MYU and ISABELLE) to create it; DAISHI, Lida, AYA, seek and YURA-sama joined together in March 1999 to change the shape of Visual Kei and Japanese Rock as a whole. Their enthusiasm and their ability to constantly remake themselves and their sound with each release are just some of the reasons why they continue to succeed.
In 1999, Visual Kei (a sub-genre of Japanese Rock characterized by elaborate costumes and make-up, oftentimes Goth in appearance, with a sound that ranges from Goth to Metal to Pop Rock) was in its boom. Bands like Malice Mizer, Dir en grey and Dué le quartz ruled the scene with their serious exteriors. DAISHI and Lida, having previously been in a visual band together had already tried the standard road for VK and had limited success. Deciding to try a new route, they found AYA, seek and YURA-sama and told themselves that if they were going to stay in the scene and be successful they needed to do something different that no one had ever seen before.
Their first set of costumes definitely drew more on the kookier side of VK. While other bands decked themselves out in black and lace, PLC painted their bodies green and blue and borrowed fashion elements from their favorite video game, manga and anime characters. They created concepts and stories behind each of their looks, experimented with blending elements of electronic music with rock and choreographed complex dances that inspired their audiences to learn and copy them at shows. They pushed the boundaries of just what being "visual" meant. They did everything from stand out in public for hours on end to let fans and passers-by take pictures of them to participating in silly activities in public while in costume for a major music magazine.
Initially with indies (now defunct) label Plug Records, they signed to major label Nippon Crown in 2002 less than three years after they had initially formed. Since that time they have sold out venues all over Japan, successfully toured in the United States, shared stages with some of Japan's biggest VK and Rock artists, collaborated with everyone from famous Goth/Punk fashion designer h. Naoto to Pop/R&B artist m.c.A•T, created music for anime and video games and have been featured on major music, television and radio venues.
From their early days as a funny-looking cosplay band out of Osaka to their status today as a worldwide music phenomenon, Psycho le Cemu continues to push the boundaries of music and draw audiences into their world from every country. "Psycho le Cemu" as a phrase may mean nothing, but to their fans it means energy, excitement and good music.
